It is not enough that you had to suffer the ordeal of pregnancy and childbirth. What do you have to show for it? A beautiful baby and stretch marks!
Not just pregnant women suffer from this affliction. Teenagers going through growth spurts and bodybuilders who rapidly bulk up can also develop stretch marks.
Stretch marks occur when skin stretches to such a point that collagen and elastin fibres rip and tear off the dermis area of the skin. This results in the skin loosing elasticity, which in turn leaves stretch marks.
Although completely removing stretch marks is not possible, there are creams that can effectively help to reduce the appearance of the scars.
When choosing a cream, look out for the following ingredients:
Liposomes:
Liposomes are delivery vehicles for drugs, and act as catalysts for oils and moisturizes.
Emu Oil:
Emu oil is derived from Emus (Australian Flightless bird), and contains approx 70% unsaturated fatty acids. It is able to penetrate the dermis layer of the skin, and acts as a healing and moisturizing agent. It also improves the lipid content of the skin, enhances water retention, and softens the skin texture for a limited period.
Vitamin E:
Vitamin E nourishes the skin cells and acts as an anti-oxidant agent preventing damage
Vitamin D3:
D3 compliments the work of vitamin E and is necessary for the production of new skin cells.
Collagen:
Collagen is a protein responsible for skin strength and elasticity, which reduces as one ages. This results in the skin loosing the ability to retain moisture and elasticity.
Elastin:
Elastin is also a protein responsible for elasticity. It helps skin to return to its original position when it is poked, pinched or prodded.
Glycolic acid:
This is the smallest alpha-hydroxy acid and is highly soluble in water. It has an excellent capability to penetrate skin, and improves the skin's appearance as well as texture by reducing wrinkles and scarring.
Beware of creams that contain water and too much Aloe Vera. These creams are too diluted, thus ineffective.
