I have relied on protein shake recipes to help create my 200-pound, 6% body fat physique. They weren't all that created it, but they sure did most of the building.
However, your standard protein shake recipe does not provide you with all the building blocks you need for a bigger, badder, healthier body. You'll need to supercharge the shake yourself with a couple of tricks that I've picked up over the years.
These protein shake recipe "hacks" are easy to implement and will get you closer to your physique and bodybuilding goals in multiple ways. For example, you'll:
-
improve the taste of your shakes, making it easier to drink what most fear as chalky -- but healthy -- concoctions. Yours will be healthy and hard to put down!
-
improve the health of your shakes. Most protein shake recipes you get are "OK" in the health department, but yours will be considered a "superfood"! One shake, instead of just giving you protein for muscles, will give you healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, multiple servings of vegetables, and more -- none of them at the cost of sacrificing great taste.
-
improve the consistency of your shakes. This can be categorized under "taste," but the truth is, I've had some great-tasting shakes in my day that tasted like filtered water. In fact, I've made plenty of shakes with peanut butter and chocolate protein as the primary ingredients that could definitely use some of these hacks to taste even better. Having a smooth shake is very important, and these tricks will get that for you!
-
improve the muscle building properties of your shakes. Combine everything above here -- better taste, better health, and better consistency -- and it's clear then that these "hacks" will get you a better muscle-building experience with your shake. They'll be healthier and easier to drink -- of course this is going to help you on your journey to low body fat and more muscle!
So, what are some of my favorite tricks?
DON'T USE ICE IN YOUR PROTEIN SHAKES -- USE FROZEN VEGETABLES
I always cringe when I see "ice" as an ingredient in a protein shake recipe. Of course, it is a reasonable ingredient to have, but it's wasted potential to me. This is because I've found that grinding frozen broccoli into my shakes -- please stay with me here! -- rather than ice provides the EXACT same function with almost NO difference in taste. Except, I am getting more than the function of ice with this trick -- I'm getting an extra serving or two of one of the world's best fibrous vegetables! I've found that I can generally get about one full cup of frozen broccoli into any shake or smoothie that has at least one cup of liquid in it. If you can't stomach that, just do half a cup. This is my absolutely best protein shake recipe trick!
USE A FIBER SUPPLEMENT
It's so easy to just dump a tablespoon of a fiber supplement into a shake that there's no reason not to. Most people just mentally skip over this idea, but this will not only lower the glycemic index of your shake (as anything with more fiber will do), but will help you become a little more "regular," something just about every bodybuilder I've ever met could use. My personal favorite fiber supplement is psyllium husks, which you can get at just about any supermarket or health food store.
USE EGG WHITES INSTEAD OF JUST WATER
If a protein shake recipe calls for one cup of water, put in half a cup of water and half a cup of pasteurized liquid egg whites, which you can get in a carton at any grocery store. Pasteurized liquid egg whites are completely safe to eat raw -- any bacteria has been cooked out of them -- and it will not only add more protein to your shake, but it will improve the consistency and thickness of it significantly.
TRY A LITTLE SUGAR FREE JELL-O PUDDING MIX
Dump a little sugar free Jell-O pudding into your shake. There are a variety of different flavors to try, and it will not only make your shake a little thicker, but it'll make it TONS tastier and leave it just as healthy as it was before!
These tricks can be used with any protein shake recipe. I recommend trying them with some of the recipes at the following site:
But they will work fine with any protein shake recipe you find through a basic web search!
Try a few of these tricks and tell me your protein shake recipes are less effective than before, I dare you!
